Real Stories about Dormitory Lives

China, K
Since I came to Japan, I have lived in a room for 2 people in the dormitory. I had lived with my family and never lived alone in my home country. I had hardly cooked before, but now I can do anything by myself. The dormitory of Iwatani College has everything to start living here immediately, and our lifestyle advisors tell us how to pay utility costs, deal with notices of absence and so on, so my student life is safe and pleasant. I think experiencing a dormitory life makes me more independent. I gained confidence to live alone after going on to university and leaving the dormitory.

Mongolia, M
I live in a room for 2 of the dormitory with a friend of mine from the same country (Mongolia). However, I try not to use Mongolian in my daily living but to use Japanese. I aim to improve my Japanese by using it in my everyday life. Besides, the dormitory is an apartment where Japanese people live, so there are lots of opportunities to see them at the entrance or in the elevator. Then, I greet them with a smile. At first, I had many difficulties, because I couldn’t make myself understood when shopping and it was hard to take out garbage, but now I can do them as part of my habits. I live each day, considering things like ‘Don’t cause any disturbance in the neighborhood’ or ‘Observe the rules of the apartment’ as Japanese culture experience.

Real Stories about Part-time Job Experiences

China, R.K

‘Now I can wait on customers with a smile!’
I have experienced various part-time jobs, and I think the job at a convenience store where I still work offers me the most to learn. I could build good relationships, learn Japanese necessary to the jobs and made Japanese friends, so I really enjoy it. They told me to wait on customers with a smile, but at first I wasn’t very well at doing so. After having learned Japanese culture and got used to life in this country, I came to serve customers naturally with a smile.

Mongolia, T.B

‘Practical approach to use Japanese!!’
I work at a fast-food shop near Yokohama Station. It was very hard at first, because there were a lot to learn. However, it gives me opportunities to meet Japanese people around my age and I enjoy working there very much. Above all, it is a good place to learn real Japanese. Getting used to a life in Japan is the most important at first, and then I think doing a part-time job is a very precious opportunity to actually utilize the Japanese I have learned.

Mongolia, Ts.M

‘I learned how to greet cheerfully!’
I learned how to write resumes and what is important for successful job interviews, took the employment test and could pass it on my first attempt. While working, I always try to greet with a smile. If I keep smiling, my colleagues are nice to me, which make it very easy for us to work together. It is difficult to learn Japanese, especially kanji, but I’ve been studying hard to learn it every day, because it is also necessary at work!
